Overview of Classroom Music Curriculum

Pre-k through 5th Grade

"Through game songs, chants, movement, instrument playing, and technology children learn the tools of music and movement understanding so students will think artistically, express themselves, and share in the artistic expressions of others."

  • Proper singing  habits
  • Awareness of Beat: steady beat vs. no beat
  • Long and Short Durations (traditional note values)
  • High and Low Pitches
  • Fast and Slow Tempo
  • Stationary and locomotor movement
  • Musical Form (ABA, ABAB, ABACA)
  • Story Songs and Games
  • Simple Dances: line and circle
  • Identify  Classroom Instruments and Orchestral Instruments and Families
  • Perform and compose ostinatos on pitched and nonpitched classroom instruments
  • Music Alphabet/Staff (treble only)
  • Music terms and symbols
  • Music Composers
  • Music Appreciation/Literature: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, If You Give A Mouse A Cookie, Mortimer, The Incredible Farkle McBride, The Nutcracker, Peter and The Wolf, Carnival of The Animals, Beethoven Lives Upstairs, The Haunted Mansion, etc.
  • PTA Program preparation and performance

3rd Grade only:

  • Play recorder with proper embouchure, tone quality, hand position, and articulation.
  • Read pitch patterns using the recorder (Notes:BAG)
  • Play simple folk songs on recorder from memory and notation

4th/5th Grades only:

  • Beginning guitar/keyboard skills
  • Recorder Karate Method Book

 

TEACHERS:

Mrs. Debra Moore

Mrs. Moore graduated from Houghton College in Houghton, NY with a Bachelor of Music degree in music education.  Her endorsements include: pre-k thru 12th grade vocal music and pre-k thru 12th grade instrumental music.  She taught at Stewartsville Elementary School from 1993-1998. From 2000-2005 she taught at Nazarene Christian Academy and Wesleyan Christian School, MD.   In the fall of  2005 she returned to Bedford County. She enjoys being with her family, church ministries, playing the piano, crafts, and camping.
